This is an 8 hour course intended to present the State of Tennessee’s standards for obtaining an Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit.
Our classes are taught by a team of instructors to ensure that each student gets the one-on-one attention they deserve. We intentionally keep our class sizes small. Not everyone learns at the same pace and some require more attention than others. Take our class and you won’t be disappointed you did. In fact, we GUARANTEE it! Don’t pass the course? This is course that will allow you to carry your handgun in several states (36 states at last count) in addition to Tennessee! You will also be allowed to carry open or concealed with this permit.
The State of Tennessee requires this class before issuing you an enhanced handgun carry permit. The permit is required to legally carry a loaded handgun on your person outside of your vehicle. As a student enrolled in the Tennessee Handgun Carry Class, you will learn about handgun nomenclature, function, operation, handgun safety, cleaning, storage, and the legal liabilities of carrying a handgun. You will also learn about carrying a handgun, ammunition malfunctions, and we will review loading and unloading, along with the fundamentals of handgun shooting.
The state requires a passing score of 70% or higher on both the written and range test. There is no practice or warm up shooting. You must come prepared to shoot a total of 50 rounds from three distances – 3 yards, 5 yards, and 7 yards. The successful completion of this course will enable the student to file an application with the state for a Handgun Carry Permit.

It is also recognized in several other states. This is known as reciprococity. We teach the Enhanced Carry Permit Class.
The other option with the state of Tennessee is the Concealed Handgun Carry Permit which allows for only concealed carrry and is only recognized in the state of Tennessee. This permit is obtained only through online training and offers no hands-on training. It is also of no use when you travel out of state.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why not just do the online carry permit?”]Currently, the online only permit does not permit open carry. Also, it is not presently recognized in any other states. This would prevent you from being able to carry when traveling out of the state.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What if I register but am unable to attend the class?”]If you find you will be unable to attend a scheduled class, just let us know so we can move you to a different class date. It is no problem at all. We understand that things come up and schedules change.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Can I carry my gun after taking the class but before I get my permit in the mail?”]No. You must wait until you receive your permit in the mail to carry your weapon.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”How long will it take me to get my permit in the mail?”]After you successfully complete the class and apply for the permit at the DMV, it will take between 10 and 90 days to receive your permit in the mail.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Do I need to bring a gun?”]You do not have to do so at all. We provide a handgun rental and ammo included in the price. For the classes, we provide a .22 caliber Taurus TX22 for your use and all the necessary ammunition.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Can I use my own gun?”]Yes. All of the information required to pass the test will be covered in the course.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Am I required to be a good shooter?”]You do not have to be a marksman. You will be asked to shoot a total of 50 shots from distances ranging from 3 to 7 yards. If you have any issues, we will work with you to improve your skill. Most people pass the first time.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What if I don’t pass the course?”]It is unlikely that you will not pass on your first attempt. If you do, however, you will be able to re-take the next course at no cost.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What if someone has a reading disability?”]That is no problem. We work with our students and can administer the test verbally and record your answers for you. We ensure everyone who meets state requirements is able to get their permit.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Can I transfer my permit from another state?”]The Tennessee Department of Safety states that anyone with a handgun permit from another state has six months to obtain a permit but the process is the same as applying for a new permit.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Can I carry openly in Tennessee?”]Tennessee does not have open carry without a permit. With this Enhanced Carry Permit, you will be permitted to carry either open or concealed.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Are your instructors certified?”]Yes! All of our instructors are certified by the state of Tennessee and authorized to teach the handgun carry permit course, as well as other firearms courses. All of our instructors also have military and/or law enforcement backgrounds as well.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why do I have to register online here and with the state of Tennessee?”]We are certified by the state of Tennessee to teach this course and you will need to register to save a place in our course. You will also need to apply for your permit online with the state of Tennessee. These are separate steps. By applying with the state, you save time at the DMV as you will already have your scores in their computer systems when you arrive and you will not have to keep up with a paper certificate. Registering with our website ensures you reserve a spot in our class, which is required to complete the permit process.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why do I have to pay you and the state?”]Our instructors are certified by the state of Tennessee to teach the handgun permit course but are not employees of the state and thus receive no compensation from them for the training we provide. You only pay us for the instruction and testing you receive. You will also need to pay the state for your permit. After you submit the application, you should see an application number and/or you may receive it via email. Please note the application number as we will need this to add you to the state’s class roster.
If you did not get a number, you likely did not finish the process. It is about 15 screens of information you enter. On the next to last screen, it will ask you to confirm the information you entered. After doing so, you will receive the application number.
You will get two numbers. There will be a confirmation code of 5 or 6 characters made up of letters and numbers. The Application Number will be all numbers and will be 9 or 10 digits long. There is a tab on the page that says “Handgun Permits”. Click this and enter your information and then click “Login.” Please complete this process. It will ask you a series of questions. After you submit the application, you should see an application number and/or you may receive it via email. Please note the application number as we will need this to add you to the state’s class roster. Once you have this, you may go to Step 2 below.
- Come back to this page and choose a class date from below and reserve your place in the class by registering for one of our upcoming classes.
- Attend our training class where we will cover all of the material to earn your carry permit. You will take the written exam and the shooting qualification. Our instructors will work with you to ensure you have the skills necessary to pass the course. We will provide the gun and ammo as part of your course fee.
- Your scores will then be posted digitally to the state by our instructors within 24 hours of completing the course. When you visit the DMV, they will assist you in completing your application process.
