According to research in 1992 by Gary Kleck, a Florida State criminologist, somewhere between 500,000 and 3,000,000 lives are saved each year by the use of a firearm. While it is very difficult to measure such with absolute certainty, we can say the real number is likely somewhere in the middle. For the sake of argument, let’s assume it is somewhere around 1,500,000 lives saved. Although that research is quite stale now, 30 years later, it is still in line with many other such studies.
Gun control advocates argue that guns are a huge problem in America and that guns take more lives than they save each year, but is that true? Let’s look at the numbers. According to a study by the CDC in 2019, there were 39,707 people killed by firearms. If you dive a little deeper, you will see that the vast majority (23,941) were from suicide. To include those deaths as an argument for why guns are evil is not really fair as those individuals would likely have used any method to end their own lives. So, doing the math leads us to realize that more like 15,766 were killed by a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.
Now compare our estimate of 1,500,000 lives saved per year to just under 16,000 lives lost and the cost/benefit alone should stifle the gun control advocate’s argument, although that is a purely mathematical example. The math shows that the ratio of lives saved to lost is probably around 95:1! Our gun rights don’t exist due to popular opinion, but are rights granted by our Creator and recognized by our Constitution! Read that again. Our gun RIGHTS are granted by God not by our Constitution, which merely recognizes this fact by the Second Amendment and these rights shall not be infringed!
The above cited study is one of many carried out over the years. While estimated lives saved vary, in literally every case we analyzed, the number of lives saved far exceeds the number taken by firearms!
The next time a hard-headed liberal tries to tell you that guns take more lives than they save in America, you will be armed with the facts and help educate them. They are listening to mainstream media and are severely uneducated as to the role firearms play in defending our people.
